There is this amazing young man who posts daily on social media. His name is Nas. At 33 years old, he quit his job and traveled the world making one-minute videos and posted them on Facebook. Why? Because he realized life was short, and that we should make the most of it. He wanted to make an impact, to learn about the world, and to have an adventure. I love his videos, and have followed his journey. You can learn more about him here https://shop.nasdaily.com/about/. One thing you will notice right away if you start to follow him is in every video he wears the same shirt, which looks like this.
I was watching Nas the other morning and realized you could order your own shirt. You click on the website, pop in your birthday and some statistical formula determines your the percentage of your life that you have already lived. I know that this is based on the average life expectancy of women in the United States is 78, (of course I plan on living longer.) So I popped my birthday in for fun and got this result. I was shocked, statistically I am almost 70 percent done.
Now I am not ordering this shirt, it’s sort of sobering actually. But I couldn’t get the message out of my mind, which is what are you doing with the time you are here? I am at a point in my life where my friends are all figuring out, “what’s next?” It’s commonly referred to as “the next chapter” discussion. It might not mean retirement,(not in my near future), it may mean different job, different home, travel, but pretty much a change. A change in the way we spend time. I am pretty satisfied with the way I have filled my days so far. I have followed my passions, raised a family, and have my health. I am extremely blessed, and I am not done. I too have more chapters to write. We all have responsibilities, to ourselves, our families and in my opinion society, but that isn’t all that we are.
This silly shirt reminded me that time marches on, and for now, I still get to decide how to spend it. So today I had lunch with a friend and took in this view, time well spent.
